Our path

From a small workshop to a trusted partner in sustainable product development across South Africa.

2017

First prototype

Jessica Walker and Nokuthula Ross built the first EcoForm mould in a shared Cape Town garage. The goal was simple: replace plastic packaging with local agricultural waste.

2019

Pilot with three manufacturers

Three Western Cape food producers agreed to test EcoForm boxes for their export shipments. The trial cut packaging costs by 18% and eliminated polystyrene entirely.

2021

BalanceBoard launched

After two years of field research with Johannesburg engineers, we released the BalanceBoard Design Toolkit. It gave product teams a structured way to weigh cost, usability, and environmental impact.

2023

LocalSource goes live

We published the LocalSource Material Library with 200+ verified South African materials. The database now serves designers in six provinces and supports both English and isiXhosa.

2025

Twelve active partnerships

GoldenMeanProducts works with twelve manufacturers across the country. Our clients have reduced virgin plastic use by an average of 34% per product line.

Why GoldenMeanProducts exists

We help South African manufacturers bring balanced products to market — without sacrificing sustainability for cost, or quality for speed.

Local first Every project starts with materials and labour available within South Africa. We avoid unnecessary imports and support regional supply chains.

Trade-off clarity Product decisions involve cost, durability, environmental impact, and usability. We make those trade-offs visible so teams can choose deliberately.

Measurable effect We track what changes after each engagement — reduced plastic use, shorter supply chains, or lower energy consumption — and report it plainly.

Open process Our methods, material library, and design tools are documented and shared. Clients keep full ownership of their outcomes.

Trusted by local manufacturers

We work alongside South African product teams who value practical, sustainable design. These are some of the partners who rely on our consultancy and material sourcing.

Mkhondo Woodworks

Used the BalanceBoard Toolkit to redesign their chair range. Switched to locally sourced pine and mycelium-based cushioning, reducing material costs by 18%.

Durban — textiles

Indalo Fabrics

Integrated the LocalSource Material Library into their R&D process. Now sourcing recycled polyester and organic cotton from verified KZN suppliers, with full traceability.

Pretoria — electronics

VoltEdge

Collaborated on a modular housing design for their solar inverters. The project reduced e-waste and earned a Green Manufacturing Award in 2024.

Our purpose

Balanced innovation for South African manufacturing

We help product teams and manufacturers create sustainable, market-ready products without compromising on cost, usability, or local impact. Based in Cape Town, working across the country.
